About Money - in this item there is a list some of the successful grant applications by two community groups.

SENS worked with the Parish Council to put together the Westmorland and Furness Nature Partnership Fund grant application. SENS co-ordinated the writing of the grant application (with support from Parish Councillors) , submitted it and managed the finances. It was based on items from the Community Plan.

Staveley with Ings Together applied for the other successful grants mentioned and managed the finances.

Reducing Sewage Spills - in the River and on our Streets Y

A reminder our goals with our work in Staveley are to:

  • Reduce the spills of sewage into the River Kent to an average of no more than 10 per year on a 10 year average from 2029

  • Have no sewage spills on the streets of Staveley to current design standards, which is a 1 in 30 year storm event

We have recently started on site at our wastewater treatment works where our plans include installing some new equipment and building two new stormwater storage tanks. This work is all within our existing site and will help us to treat more wastewater, as well as increasing storage for stormwater which will help to reduce spills. Our further plans include two more phases of work:

  • Installing a new pipeline from Brow Lane, across the field and partly down Windermere Road to reduce surface water (est. start April)

    • This work will see us constructing a new pipeline through the field from Brow Lane down to Windermere Road to take surface water (rainwater only) away from Brow Lane to alleviate the pressures that the lane currently faces. The new pipeline will join an already established highways drainage point where the surface water will run into the River Gowan. Extensive modelling has been done on this, and the additional water entering the River will not effect the levels.

  • Upsizing the sewer in Gowan Terrace and partly in Main Street to help reduce sewer flooding (est start July)

    • This involves us working within both the River Kent and the village playground, and due to fish breeding season constraints, this work can only take place between July and September. We will need to remove some equipment from the playground as well as the large conifer (this is pencilled in to be removed tomorrow, 10/02, weather depending) and the playground will need to be closed during operational hours. We are currently exploring the option of having the playground open during evenings and weekends, when we are not working, however this is TBC. We are working with the Staveley Village Association on all of this activity and will be replacing the removed playground equipment with brand new equipment which is being decided upon by the SVA and the school. We will also replace the tree once works are completed and we have committed to the SVA that the playground will be back open by 1st September. Once the works in the playground and River Kent are complete, we will then move on to working in Gowan Terrace/Main Street and are working closely with the residents of Gowan Terrace to provide alternative parking options whilst the works are ongoing.

We are also working with Westmorland & Furness Highways team to coordinate all works and can assure you that whilst we are working in Windermere Road and utilising traffic management, we will not be working within the road at Main Street. We want to help avoid as much disruption as possible whilst completing these essential works.

We will be holding a public drop-in event on 4th March, 4pm - 7pm, at the Village Institute for residents to come along and find out more about our plans, as well as further information on the playground and timelines for all phases. We would appreciate it if you could please include mention of this in your next community newsletter if the timings fit with when you will be sending it out?

We need to be ready to respond to a review of the LDNPA Local Plan. You can find it here.

If you’d like to know more about how the LDNPA sees Staveley there’s a series of interactive maps that allow you to see the Lake District National Park in relation to each of the policies. Zoom in and find Staveley on each of the maps - for example you can see which areas are designated for which function etc. Click here to go straight to the maps.

If you want to make a difference to your community join the Parish Council.

When the Parish Council look at a planning application we use our own quick checklist document. Thanks to Mike Cambray for developing this.

You can find some of the buildings we value on our website here.
